Jim Parkinson has worked as a lettering artist in Oakland, California, for more than 25 years. His work has appeared in print advertising and on book jackets, packaging, album covers, posters, billboards, movie titles, and signage. Jim designed the logo for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and for several models of Specialized Bicycles, such as StumpJumper and RockHopper. His publication logos include Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Sierra, Parenting, and Esquire (a collaborative effort) magazines, and the Atlanta Journal and San Francisco Examiner newspapers. He has designed several display typefaces, including El Grande™, Showcard Gothic™, and the FF Moderne Gothics™. His fonts designed specially for media include those for Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The New York Times magazine, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Parkinson collaborated on the design of ITC Bodoni™. Today, his business is called Parkinson Type Design.
