Typeface notes:
Designed by Gottfried Pott in 1990 for Linotypes Type Before Gutenberg series, Duc de Berry is a revival of one style of the blackletter hand known as bastarda. Bastarda letters are formed by combining the stiff, vertical, formal shapes of the textura blackletter style with the more fluid curves and strokes of humanistic handwriting. Bastarda (bâtarde in French) letters became popular in France under the patronage of Jean, Duc de Berry, 1340-1416, and remained popular well into the 1600s.
Named for Pompeiis sister city, Herculanum was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1990 for Linotypes Type before Gutenberg series. The typeface is based on first-century Roman letterforms cursive that were quickly written in clay using a stylus. Frutigers design mixes letterforms that are very narrow and very wide; combined with its simple, elemental shapes, Herculanum is one of the most expressive and individual display faces in the Adobe Type Showroom.
Omnia was designed in 1990 by calligrapher Karlgeorg Hoefer for Linotype as part of the Type Before Gutenberg series. This typeface is based on the uncial hand, written from the third to the ninth centuries. The uncial forms are simple and rounded, and made easily and quickly by holding the pen at a slight angle. Omnia is a good choice for diplomas or greeting cards, and its plain letter shapes combine well with a number of typefaces, especially sans serifs in the humanist category.
