Designed in 1992 by Karlgeorg Hoefer, Notre Dame is part of the Linotype Type Before Gutenberg series. Notre Dame is a textura blackletter, a common bookhand style from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Textura is identifiable by lower case letters made with straight-strokes, diamond-shaped feet, and equal proportions of black to white space. Notre Dame capitals have beak and claw ornamentation on the main strokes. This design should be set with tight letterspacing and word spacing to maintain the equal ratio between black and white. Use Notre Dame in display work that lends itself to blackletter types such as diplomas, initial letters, book titles, and short display copy.
Pompeijana is part of Linotype’s Type Before Gutenberg series. Adrian Frutiger designed Pompeijana in 1992 modeling it on the “scriptura actuari” (scriptura=writing; actuari=fast) used by the Romans for handwriting and stone and bronze inscriptions since the first century BC; this style of lettering is also seen on inscriptions six centuries later. These early letters were made quickly with a brush held at a steep angle, producing characters with horizontal strokes that are wider than the vertical strokes. Pompeijana is ideal for books as titles and initial capitals. More sophisticated job work, for instance, stationery and wedding invitations could easily use Pompeijana as well.
Rusticana was designed in 1992 by Adrian Frutiger for Linotype’s Type Before Gutenberg series. Rusticana is based on very early Roman inscriptions, which were in turn based on earlier Greek forms. Use Rusticana frugally in display work that requires elegance and refinement: books, magazines, journals, invitations, broadsides.
