Biography: Born in Ukraine, Karolina Novitska spent the past 10 years in Boston playfully and passionately exploring the field of visual design. Upon graduating from Emmanuel College with a BFA in Graphic Design, she continued her learning adventures at the Massachusetts College of Art, where she is currently working on her MFA in design. Recently she completed four short films along with numerous interactive projects, remixing the emotional aspects of cinema with the dynamic elements of new media. She is currently working as an art director at SearchEase and as a freelance design consultant under her own venture — StudioEkara.com.

Objective: "Crossword" is a cinematic visualization of Alzheimer's disease achieved by exploring various digital and analog manipulations of printed typography. Using a stop-motion technique, I sequenced more than 2,000 still images to create a flowing cinematic experience. The conceptual elements of confusion associated with this disease are accentuated by the soundtrack, which plays in reverse during the 'dream' sequence and seamlessly switches to forward play during the 'reality' section of the film.

Tools used: I used Adobe® Photoshop® for editing and preparing 2,000 still photographs and then imported the images into Adobe After Effects® for sequencing and further manipulation. A small portion of the film uses video, which I captured and edited using Adobe Premiere®. I edited the soundtrack using Adobe Audition®.
